YORK MINSTER: One of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals, a masterpiece in stained glass and stone and a sacred space that has been at the centre of Christianity in the North of England since the 7th century. The Minster was built for the Glory of God and this is reflected in every aspect of this ancient building, from the exquisite handcrafted stone through to the unrivalled collection of medieval stained glass.
SHAMBLES: The Shambles (officially just ‘Shambles’) is one of the most recognised, historic streets in England. It is a narrow, medieval street of mostly timber buildings dating back as far as the 13th Century. Lose yourself in the winding alleyways and take your time to soak in the atmosphere. You won’t find your normal high street retailers here, there are only charming independent shops offering everything from quirky souvenirs, unique clothing boutiques, beautiful jewellery and everything in between. There is an abundance of cosy cafés and tearooms, and if you like spooky stories, why not book one of the ghost tours whilst you are there.
JORVIK VIKING CENTRE: Discover the fascinating world of the Vikings at the Jorvik Viking Centre, a renowned archaeological attraction located in the city centre. Step back in time and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of Viking-age York, known as Jorvik in the Norse language. Through state-of-the-art exhibits and interactive displays, the Jorvik Viking Centre brings the rich history and culture of the Vikings to life, offering a captivating experience. The centerpiece of the experience is a ride on a specially designed “time capsule” vehicle that transports visitors through a reconstructed Viking Age street. As you travel along you will encounter lifelike animatronic figures, recreated buildings, and immersive soundscapes, all designed to recreate the sights, sounds, and even smells of Jorvik during the Viking era.
NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM: The National Railway Museum is devoted to telling the story of rail transport in Britain and its impact on society. The NRM collection is among the most comprehensive in the world, featuring over 100 locomotives and nearly 200 other items of rolling stock. Famous locomotives like the Mallard, the world record holder for steam locomotive speed, and the iconic Flying Scotsman are centrepieces. You will also discover unique pieces in the Bramall Gallery and Station Hall, which house a series of beautifully preserved railway coaches that tell the extraordinary stories of travel and society.
